I am not a fish cover 100I am not a fish (2013) is a collection of poems by Marie Marshall that was nominated for the 2014 T S Eliot Prize. It is a surreal romp through the human psyche, using an old device – anthropomorphism – in an entirely new and surprising way. It contains the first poem to be conventionally published in ‘Captcha’, the randomly generated ‘language’ which the internet uses to verify users as human, and follows Mr Coelacanth along with a host of other characters such as the Old-man-of-the-woods, The Lamb of Tartary, Doug Millar (a bat-winged alien with a liking for the sport of cricket), and a swarm of Japanese beetles. Clever, witty, humorous, and deadly serious. Click on the cover to buy. ISBN 978-1906856373.

SplidDsmlSplit Decision by Carmen Capuano: This book is almost difficult to categorise. It was written for the expanding ‘Young adult’ market, and contains elements of speculative fiction, crime, romance, and the thriller novel. Its protagonist, a girl just coming up to her sixteenth birthday, has a choice to make between to potential boyfriends. Which one should she date? The novel follows both plot lines – one choice leads to tensions, but has the potential for a successful romance. The second choice leads to something darker and much more dangerous. It is not until the end of the novel that readers learn which choice the protagonist made. The tension of ‘will she – won’t she?’ drives on the novel, and it’s a real page-turner. Click on the cover to buy. ISBN 978-0994673428
